About Ningbo University Health Science Center
Ningbo University Health Science Center traces its origins to the School of Medicine, established in 1998 through the philanthropic initiative of Dr. Yuhan Tang, a distinguished Hong Kong physician and scientist. It was elevated to Health Science Center status in November 2022.
Programs
The Center offers a comprehensive portfolio of undergraduate and graduate programs. At the undergraduate level, these include three five-year programs in Clinical Medicine, Preventive Medicine, and Stomatology; a four-year program in Pharmacy; an English-taught Clinical Medicine program (MBBS) for international students; and an elite innovation track in Clinical Medicine.
Graduate offerings comprise one first-level doctoral program in Clinical Medicine (academic degree), one postdoctoral research station, three master's programs in Clinical Medicine, Public Health and Preventive Medicine, and Basic Medicine, as well as four professional master's programs in Clinical Medicine, Public Health, Pharmacy, and Medical Technology.
Three disciplines—Clinical Medicine, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Biology and Biochemistry—rank in the global top 1% of ESI academic institutions.
Students
The Center currently enrolls 3,313 full-time students: 81 doctoral candidates, 1,040 master's students, and 2,192 undergraduates (including 257 international students). An additional 1,132 students are enrolled in equivalent master's degree programs. Students have garnered prestigious accolades including:
- Challenge Cup National Extracurricular Academic Competition: 1 Grand Prize, 2 Second Prizes, and 1 Third Prize at the national level; 1 Grand Prize, 5 First Prizes, 1 Second Prize, and 1 Third Prize at the provincial level.
- Challenge Cup National Entrepreneurship Plan Competition: 2 National Gold Awards, 3 Provincial Gold Awards, and 1 Provincial Bronze Award.
- China International College Students' Innovation Competition (formerly Internet+ Competition): 7 National Gold Awards, 3 National Silver Awards, 10 Provincial Gold Awards (including 2 by international student teams), 2 Provincial Silver Awards, and 3 Provincial Bronze Awards.
The Center has also received one Ministry of Education award for excellence in ideological and political education.
Outcomes
Over the past three years, overall graduate employment has exceeded 97%. Postgraduate admission rates average 61.02% for Clinical Medicine undergraduates and 24.78% for Preventive Medicine undergraduates.
Clinical Medicine graduates maintain an 86.49% pass rate on the National Medical Licensing Examination—approximately 15 percentage points above the national average. Preventive Medicine graduates average 78.95% on the National Medical Licensing Examination, with the 2023 cohort achieving an 80.95% pass rate on the National Public Health Physician Qualification Examination, ranking first province-wide. Clinical Medicine master's graduates hold a 98.78% pass rate on the Standardized Residency Training Examination.
The Center has been designated a national off-campus practical education base for college students.
Structure
The Center comprises three colleges: the College of Basic Medical Sciences, the College of Public Health, and the College of Pharmacy. It also houses two university-level research institutes: the Ningbo University New Drug Technology Research Institute and the Ningbo University Institute of Intelligent Medicine and Bioengineering, along with three shared service platforms—the Large-Scale Instrument Center, the Ningbo University Laboratory Animal Center, and the Ningbo University Body Donation Center.
Additionally, the Center oversees the Ningbo University Center for Behavioral Neuroscience, the Ningbo University Diabetes Research Center, and the Ningbo University Biomedical Engineering Research Center.
Clinical and teaching partnerships include 6 directly affiliated hospitals, 6 non-directly affiliated hospitals, 15 teaching hospitals, 37 preventive medicine education and practice bases, 19 community health service teaching bases, and 9 pharmacy teaching bases. The Center also hosts one provincial-level off-campus practical education base for college students established under the province's 13th Five-Year Plan.
Research
The Center boasts one national teaching team, one provincial teaching team, and eight municipal science and technology innovation teams in Ningbo. The curriculum includes 8 national-level courses and 25 provincial-level courses. It holds one national first-class undergraduate program designation, one provincial first-class undergraduate program designation, one provincial key program, one provincial advantageous program, and one provincial experimental teaching demonstration center. The center is an approved pilot institution for the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health Excellence in Medical Education and Training initiative.
Research infrastructure includes one national international cooperation base, two provincial key laboratories, three municipal key laboratories, one provincial/ministerial-level international cooperation base, two provincial key disciplines, and two municipal key disciplines.
Faculty have secured 228 national-level research projects (including 7 key projects) and 432 provincial/ministerial-level projects, with total research funding of 296.55 million RMB. Research honors include one National Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Class, participating unit) and 15 provincial/ministerial-level science and technology awards. The Center holds 123 authorized invention patents, has published 2,371 papers (including 1,636 high-level papers and 29 highly cited papers), and has produced 25 textbooks and monographs plus 6 compilations.
Faculty
Faculty comprises 110 full-time academics, 7 full-time postdoctoral researchers, and 3,224 clinical faculty. Among full-time faculty are 36 full professors, 37 associate professors, and 37 lecturers. The Center has 68 doctoral supervisors and 624 master's supervisors. Faculty honors include 4 Chinese and foreign academicians, 10 State Council Special Government Allowance recipients, 6 national-level talents, and 88 municipal and provincial talents across various programs.
Internationalization
Center is committed to internationalization. It launched international student program with English-medium instruction in 2011. Since 2020, It has partnered with the University of Marie and Louis Pasteur and the University of Burgundy Europe in France to offer a dual-degree joint doctoral program in Clinical Medicine.
It maintains active partnerships for academic exchange and faculty/student mobility with leading institutions worldwide, including the Medical University of South Carolina (USA), University of Skövde (Sweden), University College London (UK), University of Manchester (UK), University of Sydney (Australia), Charles Sturt University (Australia), University of Adelaide (Australia), and Hangyang University (Korean).
